Statistics are most often revised for 1 of 2 reasons:

  1. For certain statistics initial estimates are released with the expectation that these may be revised and updated as further data becomes available.
  2. Revisions may also be made when methods or systems are changed.

These types of planned revisions should not be confused with errors in released statistics, which are genuine mistakes. Such mistakes occur rarely and, when they do happen, corrections are made in a timely manner, announced and clearly explained to users in line with the Code of Practice for Official Statistics (Principle 2, Practice 7).

Correction See correction
We have identified an error in the quality adjustment made to reflect the specifications of a single tablet computer collected in February 2023. This error has no impact on the Consumer Prices Index including owner occupiers’ housing costs (CPIH), Consumer Prices Index (CPI) or Retail Prices Index (RPI) headline index numbers, annual or monthly growth rates to 1 decimal place. However, the annual inflation rate for “data processing equipment” and “personal computers” has been understated by 0.2 percentage points (pp) and 0.3 pp respectively. Although lower-level indices are published to 1 decimal place, the statistical uncertainty is significantly higher than for the headline indices. We have now corrected CPIH and CPI index levels affected alongside the publication of March’s consumer price statistics on 19 April 2023. The RPI index levels will not be corrected, in line with our Revisions policy for consumer price inflation statistics.

Important notes and usage information

Data are broadly at the geographic level of Nomenclature of Territorial Units for Statistics (NUTS) 1 (for example, South East England, West Midlands, Wales). This level of detail was chosen to ensure that no individual retailer or service provider will be able to be identified and therefore is in line with the assurances given to data providers. For the same reason, a very small number of item indices (six) are also unavailable. With effect from the January 2017 CPI publication, these data will be published on a monthly basis showing the latest month data.
