Thank you for your Freedom of Information request enquiring the number of business closures and number of companies sold abroad. 

For information ONS produces a publication called Business Demography. The information shows annual change in the number of UK businesses broken down by sector of the economy. 

The data you are requesting on business closures (incl care homes) are available in the accompanying datasets within the Business Demography publication. The most recent data published in November 2023 cover the years 2017 to 2022. Previous publications are available with data ranging back to 2009 on the current ONS website. 

Please note there have been several changes in methodology used to compile the business demography data and these changes can be found here.  

Unfortunately, we do not hold information on the number of businesses and companies sold abroad.
